In 1993, three years before his death, I did a video interview with my in-law Kinyala Johannes Lauwo (1871-1996), the first man known to have climbed Mount Kilimanjaro. He said he climbed it nine times before he realised there was an inner crater. He said he had found a dead leoprd there but when pressed said he had never heard of Hemingway's book about it. I also checked the mission records at Ashira Luthern Church where it was recorded he had been baptised in 1916 and  born in 1871, although the exact date was missing. That is why he never got into the Guinness Book of Records as the world's oldest person. Next time I am back home I will distribute DVDs of the interview to various outlets.
