It was the same for the boys. Sharing the bath water, mihindi (maize), the coolness of the trees around the playing fields, learning about owl pellets, yes, and kite flying your own hand built hexagonal shaped kites out of bamboo and paper. Paludrine anti malaria tablets at lunchtime, mosquito nets, playing jacks with peach stones if you didn't have the metal spiky things, black and white films (Helen Keller, the Australian Outback, the Carry On films). It's all there.

Does anyone know the history or have a picture of the Lancaster bomber model that used to hang in the building opposite the main assembly hall?

Barry, I've sent you an email and have decided to post the picture I took of you here too. Can you identify everyone in it? I can see Edward Halwenge, Dennis, yourself, Simon (?), and Daphne (?) leaning against the goal post. It was taken in 1963. Rob

Mark Morgan's picture of his father, Edward Halwenge ahead of him, and me in the foreground, ascending Mbeya Peak before the bees stung someone and the climb was called off.

The other one of Mark's pictures has me looking over Mr Morgan's right shoulder, like a mischevious imp, on top of Mt Rungwe.

Some more pictures. Mark Rowland and his little brother, and another, as well as my sister, in the pictures below.

I was there from '59 to '63, Stanley House.

First term Sept '59 was brutal with fist fights in the dorm and the tackie for breaking the cowhide straps on my bed. But I survived and have very fond memories of the school. We said prayers every night at the end of our beds. I remember playing jacks with peach stones on the dorm verandah, hand inspections before supper, the jumping competitions off the swings, playing marbles, damming the water during the rains, throwing sheath knives to stick them into trees, pulling and being pulled on roller skates by our elastic belts, climbing the trees, our hike up Mbeya Peak (someone was stung by bees so we never reached the top - picture of the HM, me and Edward Halwenge).  We succeeded in climbing Mount Rungwe and I'm in the picture too just behind HM's right shoulder. As boys we were cruel to the weakest and I did some unspeakable things, just like the savages in William Golding's Lord of the Flies. I still feel guilty about half strangling one boy in a fight. Buying catapults on the train back to Mwanza.

I'll dig up a more coherant story later.

P.S. Mark Rowland is in the picture outside the Standard 6 classroom (nearest Mr Morgan's office). The one in Cairo in front of the Sphinx is me on my last voyage home via the Suez Canal in the Summer of '63

Barry and Dennis, I remember both of you now. I wasn't in the hockey team but remember watching you, Barry, hardening your hockey stick by bouncing a ball repeatedly on it. I have a better photograph taken a year later of almost exactly the same group. I was a small boy in Stanley House, Hilly by nickname, a friend of Edward Halwenge and Mark Roland.

Gosh David, I had forgotten about the wooden propellers. I watched them being made in the small workshop near the tuck shop by one of the gardeners. We used to queue to get our sweet ration, alphabetically or reverse alphabetically. I collected cigarette cards of footballers and chocolates with plastic toys in them. The sweets were all laid out and priced.

The stones from the unripe peaches were used for jacks and I got tummy ache by eating unripe and unwashed guavas. There was a mulberry bush somewhere as well.

Pulling dinkies along by string and constructing dams during the rainy season in the gulley by the road bridge, near the southwestern end of the classrooms. And in the climbing frame where Luigi broke his elbow and the swings from where we used to see how far we could jump.

The times table drills and tests.

The roller skating on the paths through the woods pulled by our elastic 'S' hook belts.

Can anyone remember the kite flying? Must have been '62 or '63.

Planting the fir trees for Prince Edward Andrew's birth.

Taking Paladrine(?) anti malaria tablets at lunchtime.

Mark, I'm the Stanley boy peeping over your father's right shoulder on the summit of Mt Rungwe. Amazing photo.
